Pend Oreille County PUD #1 provides residential, commercial and industrial utility services (electric, water, broadband) to all of Pend Oreille County. The District owns and operates Box Canyon Dam, located just a few miles north of the town of Ione, which is approximately one hour north of the District’s headquarter offices in Newport, WA.
The District will have the following summer employment opportunities for those students who are eligible and qualified (see attached guidelines for additional information). The term of employment for all the positions listed is approximately 3 months and may begin as early as mid-May (depending on school schedules).

Position Summary – CNS Field Support (1 Opening)
This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be primarily located at the Community Network System (CNS) facility in Newport, WA. The position includes field work supporting CNS staff with associated customer connections. This position will also require sorting and hauling fiber optic cables and associated components, light brush clearing using a weed trimmer and/or chainsaw, performing audit and cleanup work at electronic HUB cabinet locations, and occasional field data collection work. Individuals will work closely with the CNS Supervisor and staff to organize and accurately record levels of working stock and deployed materials. Normal working hours are 8:00 – 5:00, Monday-Friday.
Position Summary – IT Support Assistant (1 Opening)
This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. The primary responsibilities for this position will be to organize and document certain aspects of the District’s Information Technology systems, provide basic Helpdesk support, along with computer support tasks, such as simple hardware and software troubleshooting, resolving printing issues, and data entry tasks. The successful candidate should have familiarity with computers, possess an understanding of using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows 10, and be detail oriented with good written and communication skills. Normal working hours are 8-5 Monday - Friday.
Position Summary – Legal Records (1 Opening)
This position is based out of the PUD’s Newport Office, and is primarily indoor/office work focusing on digitizing the PUD’s paper records. Work includes organizing, indexing, scanning, and logging archived documents and drawings per the PUD’s established archival system. Individual will work closely with the PUD’s legal counsel and public records officer, and may include assignments for other departments including finance, human resources, and natural resources. Applicants must be willing to perform repetitive scanning & filings tasks, have a fine attention to detail, and be familiar with basic computer functions and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Position Summary – Brush Crew/Vegetation Management (1 Opening)
These are temporary, full-time positions. Brush crew members will work alongside District line construction and vegetation maintenance crews, responsible for clearing brush and small trees within power line easements and other rights-of-way. They are also given the responsibility of vegetation cleanup after District line/vegetation maintenance crews remove larger trees/branches. Brush crew members are also responsible for safety flagging duties on state/county roadways during the summer for the line/maintenance crews.
Working on a brush crew is physically demanding, requiring the ability to safely operate a chain saw and mobile chipping machine for extended time periods. Work is performed outdoors under a variety of summer weather and terrain conditions. Requirements include the ability to regularly stand, walk, climb, lift/carry and work under outdoor conditions of ongoing and significant physical exertion. Brush crew members must be able to work safely and sometimes independently – this requires a strong ability to be self-starting and demonstrate good judgment on a continuous basis. Strict adherence to OSHA/WISHA standards and District safety procedures and practices is required. Normal working hours are 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday, or 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, Tuesday-Friday.
Position Summary – Natural Resources (2 Openings)
These temporary, full-time employment opportunities will be based out of the Natural Resources operations facility in Newport, WA. These are field positions working outdoors under a variety of summer weather and terrain conditions, supervised by Natural Resources professional staff. Duties include: building/removing/repairing fences; installing/changing beaver wraps on trees; planting/watering trees; mowing access and fire trails with a tractor/four wheeler; clearing brush/thinning trees using a chainsaw; other miscellaneous tasks related to managing wildlife habitat properties that are owned/maintained by the District.
This is physically demanding work, requiring the ability to safely operate power equipment (e.g., chain saw, auger) and various hand tools. Requirements include the ability to regularly stand, walk, climb, lift/carry and work under outdoor conditions. Those hired must be able to work safely and sometimes independently – this requires a strong ability to be self-starting and demonstrate sound judgment on a continuous basis. Strict adherence to OSHA/WISHA standards and District safety procedures and practices will also be required.
The normal working hours are 7:00 – 4:00, Monday-Friday. Ideally, those interested would be available to work from approximately mid-June thru (or near the end of) September.
Position Summary – Maintenance, Box Canyon (2 Openings)
This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be located at the Box Canyon hydroelectric project. Maintenance workers perform general grounds/facility maintenance and cleanup at Box Canyon Dam and several off site locations. The position incumbent will also drive/operate pick-up trucks, small maintenance vehicles and a variety of power equipment/tools in the course of completing various job duties. Normal working hours are 7:30 – 4:00, Monday-Friday.
